This is our second issue of Farm Diversity – the magazine aimed at farmers who are starting out on new diversification projects.

We hope to offer both information and inspiration, whether you’re looking at different ways to diversify or have already settled on what you want to do.

Whether it’s a glampsite, a wedding venue, renewable energy or retail, or something else entirely, there is an idea out there for every farm – although we know it’s not as simple as just trying something new. From convincing family members that now is the time to diversify, to finding funding and getting planning permission, there are numerous hurdles to jump before your dreams can even begin to become a reality.

And that’s why Farm Diversity is here – to show you some great examples of success stories and highlight the pitfalls so you avoid them.

A great example of multi-tasking is Gitcombe Estate in Devon, which has become a holiday destination with a focus on accessibility. Owner Rodney O’Brien talks us through how he went from owning a single pig to redeveloping five farms over the years.

We set our sights further afield from the UK in this issue, as Janice Hopper heads over the North Sea to Norway, where diversifying farmers welcome tourists by the cruise ship-load.

Meanwhile in Wales, Parc Y Bocs grew its pet food-producing business into an agri-tourism site where parents bring their children to play and relax in the café, buy food in the farm shop and enjoy being up close with a variety of animals.

As well as a glamping project, an ecological haven, meat on a mission and garden centres galore, this issue is packed with examples of successful rural business projects, as well as the products and services you need to carry them out.

We’re looking forward to meeting more readers and contributors at the Farm Business Innovation Show – look out for our stand FR1140 and say hi. You can also keep in touch by email, phone or social media and don’t forget to sign up for our FREE magazine and e-newsletter – it could just change your business for the better.
