The UK Agri-Tech Centre is supporting Farm24

Line break 3

The UK Agri-Tech Centre is joining the nation in celebrating this year’s Farm24 to shine a spotlight on the agricultural industry in 24 hours from 7-8 August.

Farmers and innovators across the agricultural industry work hard to get healthy, nutritious food on our tables, something that is not always an easy feat given the challenges they face with the great British weather.

As part of Farm24, we want to shine a light on those working behind the scenes to help keep the industry moving and progressing—whether it’s with the adoption of new agricultural technology or the introduction of an innovative, time-saving idea—we are working with some amazing partners who fly the farming flag all year round.

What are we working on?

When it comes to reducing food waste and offering nutritious options for the consumer, the work the UK Agri-Tech Centre has done with partners UPP on the broccoli harvester now sees 100% of the plant being used instead of just approximately 30%.

This makes the innovative sensor technology a sustainable, friendly choice and helps provide more nutritious food options for the consumer, while also maximising the value of what we grow.

In terms of innovative ideas, the work we have done with our partners and scientists on the Dancing with Daffodils project aims to help reduce methane production and improve feed efficiency in ruminants by using a specific alkaloid extracted from daffodils.

The growth of technology allows further partnerships to flourish.

Take our partnership for the Precision Pollination project, for example, which involves the use of drones to improve fruit quality, forecasting and yield in UK strawberry production by aiding pollination in food crops using changes in airflow.

We’ve also supported HoofCount’s Pedivue device because lameness continues to be one of the main - if not biggest - issues within the dairy sector.
 Camera
This technology enables farmers to detect lameness at an early stage by visualising changes to hoof health, allowing the farmer to intervene with early treatment which promotes good animal health as well as saving on future vet costs.

The evolution of technology has enabled us to create more opportunities for the industry which helps address the needs and challenges farmers and UK agri-tech businesses face, resulting in a positive impact on the consumer at the end of the line.

The development of technology helps us to support our farmers and UK agri-tech businesses to continue the fantastic work they do.

Feeding the nation.
